Oregano seed
Oregano is a perennial herb with purple flowers that easily spreads
by underground runners. Oregano seed grows dark green plants that
get 2 feet high and have a nice aroma. A standard kitchen herb and a
must for every herb garden.
Oregano is an easy to
grow herb that likes full sun, well-drained soil and can even
tolerate poor soil.
Plant Oregano seed
outside in the spring or started indoors and transfer outside when
temperatures remain above 45 degrees F.
Sow oregano seed
outdoors in spring, only cover slightly with soil as oregano seed
requires some light to germinate. Thin 10–12 inches apart when 4
inches tall.
How to harvest
Oregano:
-
You can harvest
single oregano leaves throughout your growing season, let your
Oregano plant get 5” high then pinch off the tips of stems to
use for cooking. This will also give you a bushier oregano
plant.
-
To prolong your
harvest you should cut the Oregano flower buds off as they
appear.
-
To harvest the
whole oregano plant cut the stems a few inches above the ground.
Harvest Oregano leaves just as flower buds form for best flavor.
How to store
Oregano:
- Fresh Oregano
should be stored in the refrigerator wrapped in a slightly damp
paper towel, use within 3 days.
- Frozen Oregano,
either whole or chopped, should be stored in airtight
containers, or you can freeze the oregano in ice cube trays
covered with water.
- Dried Oregano
should be kept in a tightly sealed glass container in a cool,
dark and dry place where it will keep fresh for about six
months.
Oregano, fresh, frozen or dried, should be added toward the end of
the cooking process because heat can cause a loss of the delicate
oregano flavor.
