Allium schoenoprasum
Similar to a mild green onion. Chives are
delicious in salads, soups, egg dishes, with fish and with vegetables
such as potatoes.Chives as well as
most herbs prefer a rich well drained soil.
Chives can be planted in pots, clumps, or rows. The also make a great
edge plant around herb gardens.
With their purple flowers chives resemble field clover and the flowers
are edible and add nice color to salads.
Chives also attract bees, butterflies and other beneficial insects.
Plant in full sun to partial shade. Sow seeds 1/8" deep in early spring
or start indoors 6 - 8 weeks before last frost. Keep
moist until sprouts are established. From then on water when soil
becomes dry.
