Seed Starting Tips

Having success with indoor seed starting is like most things, you need a good foundation. In the case of indoor seed starting quality seeds and soil are a must. Many people think the cheapest mix is the best way to go, after all it’s just dirt right?

Wrong, the nutrients in the “dirt” and soil ph play a major factor in your indoor seed starting success. If your soil is too hot or nutrient rich seedlings can burn right up. If your soil ph is incorrect it can create “nutrient lockup” which stunts and eventually kills seedlings.

They say some people have a green thumb but it’s often the ones who research, learn and use quality soil correctly balanced for the particular plants they are growing that have success.

You also want to use fresh seeds. Old seeds have a poor germination ratio and produce weaker seedlings. You don’t want to waste your time, money and effort producing inferior seedlings which in turn produce inferior garden plants.

Purchase your seeds from a reliable source. www.MillingtonSeed.com is a great choice. We understand how important fresh quality seeds are. We know you put a lot of time and effort in your garden and take pride in your work. We also put a lot of time and effort into making sure you get only fresh high quality seeds when you purchase from Millington Seed Company.

We currently don’t carry organic seeds but if you are interested in organic seeds we recommend purchasing your organic seeds through Gardens Alive. They carry a huge line of high quality organic products for the home gardener.

Soil is extremely important when it comes to indoor seed starting because seedlings are so tender.  If you get them off to a good start using the right soil you will have much healthier plants in the end. We recommend using a product called Natural BeginningsTM Seed-Starting Mix manufactured by Gardens Alive.

You will get a very high germination ratio and your sprouts will be extremely healthy and vigorous. Healthy sprouts will grow into stronger healthier plants that produce beautifully.

Natural Beginnings is formulated to allow air to circulate while remaining damp reducing the chance of root disease. This is a soil-less seed starting medium that contains coir, worm castings and mealworm guano as a natural organic nutrient source.

The coir provides more oxygen to the root zone which means healthier plants that can take in nutrients more readily. This produces fast growing healthy seedlings that are ready to be placed into your garden sooner.

Choice of container isn’t the most important issue but I do recommend that you don’t use those organic “biodegradable” peat pots. You know the ones that are supposed to bio-degrade? I’ve never had any luck with those things and there are two big reasons why. They don’t decompose fast enough and your plants will get root bound.  They are made of peat which has a low ph which means they are quite acidic. Once the roots begin to feed from the organic pot they begin to yellow and can get “nutrient lock”. This leads to problems and that’s just what you don’t want.

Florescent lighting is usually adequate to start seedlings indoors there are many florescent tubes manufactured specifically for indoor growing. I recommend those type of florescent tubes.  Using a small fan or a larger fan pointed indirectly on the seedlings will help strengthen them. This helps prevent them from growing too tall and “leggy”. Just don’t blast your seedlings with the fan because it can cause them to burn. You also want to keep the florescent light very close to the tops of seedlings, no further than an inch. If the plants touch the light they will burn, otherwise normal florescent lights aren’t very hot.

With the cost of planted flats now days it can pay to star your own tomatoes, peppers and any other garden plants or flowers you

normally buy. We would spend hundreds if we didn’t start our own garden plants and flowers.
