Corn Poppy annual
A very easy annual to grow in the garden, the red corn poppy has delicate 3" fire engine tissue paper flowers with black centers. A very hardy plant that prefers loose soil, and will tolerate
drought well. It prefers neutral to
alkaline ph, but is adaptable. The foliage of the red poppy is
inconspicuous, allowing exposure of the huge, brilliant flowers. Prefers
full sun but will tolerate partial shade.
Sow in spring, or in fall after frosts. Fall seeding produces very early
spring blooms. Sow on the surface of moist soil, don't cover. Keep
moist but not soggy and seeds will germinate in 10-15 days. Thin to
8" apart when plants are 1-2" tall. The Red Corn Poppy gets
18-24" tall and reseeds easily if the seed falls on bare ground.
