Jumping Jubilee Johnny Jump Up
Viola cornuta (Violaceae) anual/perenial
These Johnny Jump Ups are our own unique hybrid/mix. We found some
"wild" nearly pure yellow Johnny jump ups growing on the edge of the
forest on our property and planted some of these with our regular Johnny
Jump Ups. The "normal" Johnny Jump Ups we were growing came from a plant
brought home from school as a mothers day gift from our oldest son. We
collected the seeds for years from the gift Jump Up's and brought them
with us when we moved here.
This cross wasn't planned it just happened but the flowers are just
lovely. You get some yellow some normal and a plethora of color
combinations from the 2 original parents. Some flowers will be lighter
purple while others will have darker purple markings. Most flowers are a
mix of purple shades with yellow, white and black markings. The black
markings resemble eyelashes and seem to be looking back at you. These
flowers have brought great joy to our family. So many of our friends
like our Johnny-Jump-Ups we decided it was time to release a limited
number of packs. We collected a surplus of seeds this year and hope to
collect even more next year.
Johnny-Jump-Ups can easily establish and even take over an area. They
are cold resistant and start flowering shortly after daffodils and keep
flowering through most of the summer. We have even planted this variety
in the autumn to add a little color to the flower beds that have retired
for the season.
Johnny Jump Ups prefers partial shade to full sun in well drained soil.
Great for borders, containers, flower beds, ground cover, etc. Picking
faded blossoms will prolong flowering.
Sow seeds 1/16 inch deep or just spread seeds and lightly cover. Keep
moist for 2 weeks after sprouts emerge or until sprouts establish into
small plants. Germination - 7-14 days.
Packet contains approximately 300 seeds.
