Digitalis purpurea
Foxglove is one of the loveliest
flowers with numerous tubular blooms grown on a tall spike. The colors
range from a deep purple to lilac with spots inside the throat. Foxglove
is a biennial, the leaves form the first year followed by the flower
spike blooming June - September the next year. Prefers partial sun to
full shade.
Sow Foxglove in spring after all danger of frost has passed.
Mix with sand and sprinkle on the surface of
moist soil. Germination takes 20-30 days.
Miscellaneous: Foxglove is a
source of digitalis, prescribed by doctors to strengthen the heart and
regulate its beat.
Extremely poisonous! Do not eat!
