When you want a big, fast-growing plant,
Castor Bean is the one to choose. This plant grows 8 feet or more in
just one year. Its not unusual for a Castor Bean plant to grow 15 feet
tall. Castor Beans have large exotic leaves that grow up to 2 feet wide.
In areas with mild, frost-free winters Castor Beans may live for many
years and become quite woody and tree-like.
Castor Beans are great mole control as the moles die when they eat the
roots.
Sow seeds outside after all danger of frost has passed. Choose a sunny
location and plant the castor bean seed 1 inch deep. Castor Beans grow 3
feet wide and up to 8 feet tall so give enough space when planting.
Castor bean seeds are highly poisonous. It is wise to remove and discard
the seedpods to protect your children. If you choose to let the seed
pods develop remember to keep children away from seed pods developing on
plants. Flowers occur most of the year in dense clusters with female
flowers just above the male flowers.
The sap from seeds and the plant may cause an allergic reaction, so
handle seeds with care, and touch these plants only while wearing long
sleeves and gardening gloves.
