A genuine heat lover the Mexican Sunflower sets the dog days of summer ablaze with her sizzling orange daisies. Tolerates infertile soil, drought, and neglect. Very easy for new gardeners and children. This plant is attractive to bees, butterflies (especially the elegant swallowtails) and/or birds. Grows up to 6’ tall and 4’ wide making it a great annual hedge. The leaves and stems are covered with soft downy fuzz. They make excellent cut flowers and there is an abundance of daisy flowers so that you can cut many for bouquets and have numerous flowers remaining on the plant for the wildlife. Sow seeds after all chance of frost has past. Requires light to germinate, press seed lightly onto soil surface or cover with just a dusting of soil. Plant 1” apart. Germination takes 10-15 days. Thin 24" apart when plants are 2-3" tall. Packet contains ˝ teaspoon Mexican Sunflower Seeds,
approximately 100
seeds. Here is a really neat video we found that really shows the Mexican sunflowers beauty. At first the butterfly is landing on butterfly weed then he flies over to the Mexican Sunflowers so you have to watch for a few seconds before you will see the Mexican Sunflower. |
